Snow is almost a guarantee all the way up here . northern end of the G Trail , but conditions were poor , so we turned around and stumbled upon a secluded spot among the trees . Its exact location wasn ’ t clear , but it was in the vicinity of Ham and Round lakes , and it ’ s a short distance off the trail with a convenient roundabout that makes it easy to get in and out .

Three days of high sun , clear skies and temperatures flirting with 50 degrees meant the snowmobile season was in its waning hours . Even though this group of snowmobilers hadn ’ t experienced enough cold and snowy weather to satisfy its love for winter , the spring weather felt great while resting beside the trail at our lookout spots .
We ’ d enjoyed a grin-filled snowmobile trip in one of Minnesota ’ s most beautiful and desolate regions , and it proved whether it ’ s to meet an old friend for a cold beer on a whim , jump in the car on Sunday for a leisurely drive or culling together a handful of buddies for a snowmobile trip , plans with fewer details often equate to the best times — and rides — of our lives .
