The Huron National Forest features a web of secondary trails and fire lanes that are delightful single tracks for exploring the woods .
This rollicking ride on the perfectly groomed trail was my first taste of Lower Michigan ’ s Ogemaw Hills , and I was instantly hungry for more .
For anyone who loves to venture outside their normal riding areas , discovering a new venue is always a treat . It ’ s even better when a personal invitation provides the opportunity to log miles and make new friends . That ’ s what photographer Dan Guendert and
I experienced in mid-February when we were guests of the Ogemaw Hills Snowmobile Club ( OHSC ), one of the premier clubs in Michigan . “ We ’ re very proud of our 50-year history and the great riding we enjoy throughout our region ,” said Doug Lubahn , one of the club ’ s trustees and its historian . “ Our trails and those of three neighboring clubs comprise a network that emphasizes the scenic beauty of the
Ogemaw Hills , the Au Sable River and the Huron National and Au Sable State Forests . Our club maintains and grooms 105 miles of trail and that ’ s just a portion of the larger system that is serviced by a half dozen groomers .” Lubahn had invited Snow Goer magazine to visit and write about the club and when the full-time edit staff passed along that invitation to me and Dan Guendert , we happily accepted the offer . It was a long drive around Lake Michigan from our Wisconsin homes ( Dan went over the top of the lake , I went around the bottom ), but it was well worth the effort .
