Riding in New England , here are some typical views you ’ ll experience : the small town feel of New Hampshire , great rural views like this trail following the Connecticut River into Pittsburg from the west and happy riders enjoying it all .
Geographic tags aside , a fleet of borrowed Ski-Doos exposed my friends and I to dramatic Eastern mountains and cliffs as we rode past crystal blue frozen waterfalls and through charming , historic villages , all dissected by surprisingly smooth and interestingly tree-lined trails that rarely crossed roads .
The ultra-rural landscape had an appealing , off-the-grid feel that provided a sense of solitude , yet when we did interact with the locals , they exhibited an unbeatable small-town charm .
My expectations for a New England riding adventure were high , but they were easily surpassed by the reality experienced during this particular late winter adventure .
Cruising Through Winter Paradise
At the invitation of co-worker Jeff Newth , this Wisconsin-based veteran trail rider joined Jeff , his brother Jay , plus Glenn Kelsey from Sportline Power Products of Queensbury , New York , on my first New England riding adventure .
Our drive up to Northern Vermont showcased increasingly tall snowbanks the closer we got to Jeff Newth ’ s cabin . Talk of a 55-inch snow base seemed like hyperbole , until we started seeing it out the window .
The last part of our drive was on a recently plowed service road that took us deep into the woods , ending at a rustic cabin just 4 miles south of the Canadian border . The nearest town was Averill – population 24 – and most cabins / camps / hunting shacks in the region have no electricity , water or sewer . Yes , we were definitely remote !
If you want to stay this far out , it ’ s best to start searching for a cabin to rent , because you won ’ t find a Ramada or Marriott . Similarly , food stops are local Ma ’ and Pa ’ joints – we did not seek out or find many chain restaurants – and riders need to pay close attention to the fuel gauge as gas stations are few and far between .
