The Big Obsidian Flow is impassable unless its extremely irregular and rocky surface is covered in very deep snow , as it is in this view . and are justifiably proud of both their network and the first-class equipment they employ .
Our mid-day rendezvous was at the 10 Mile Sno-Park ( elevation 5,550 feet ), a popular jump-off point for people touring the volcanic region and one of two parking lots in the area ( the other is two miles away , and a thousand feet lower ). Photographer Dan Guendert was aboard a late model Ski-Doo graciously provided by a club member , while I was assigned the club ’ s auxiliary sled , a vintage Polaris
Indy 500 RMK .
After reviewing the map and the places we ’ d visit , we were off . This is a compact area , so none of our destinations were very far apart .
A short two-mile ascent brought us to the overlook at Paulina Creek Falls , where the roar of the rushing water could be heard as it dramatically tumbled 80 feet over ice and rock .
