MAINE

Aroostook County
Aroostook County , “ The Crown of Maine ,” is the largest county east of the Mississippi River and the farthest north , so it offers an unusually long riding season .
Surrounded on three sides by Canada , and taking up the entire northern 20 percent of Maine , The County has 6,500 square miles of territory . That makes it is bigger than any of America ’ s four smallest states , and nearly as large as three more . And a sub-Arctic climate retains the up to 120-inch annual snowfall when areas elsewhere are browning out .
The County holds some of the most varied and enjoyable snowmobiling in the country . Over 2,300 miles of mostly groomed trails include rail trails that make it easy to cover ground quickly for access to more intimate woods trails , rolling potato field trails , 342 frozen lakes , and the ungroomed trails and serious off-trail boondocking in the Allagash . The Deboullie Mountain Trail is a favorite in this back country area .
Trails are well-marked and well-mapped , making getting around easy . While circulating on these well-groomed ribbons , consider stopping at some of the local club houses which are among the best in North America . Enjoy some coffee or a meal while getting the latest trail updates . Or make it even easier and engage a registered Maine trail guide to show you around .
Several trails in and near southern Aroostook County provide multiple views of snow laden Mt . Katahdin , the state ’ s highest peak . On the eastern edge of The County , ITS 81 is one of the most unusual trails anywhere . Heading north from outside Limestone , this major snowmobile route is situated right on the Canadian border . Large granite border markers divide the northbound traffic that is actually in New Brunswick , from the southbound traffic that is still in Maine . Just stay on the trail and you won ’ t have trouble . To enter Canada you must check in at a border station , have required documentation , and you ’ ll also need a provincial trail pass . Further north , enjoy scenic views of the St . John Valley and watch for the monkeys over the trail near Frenchville .
Lodging properties and dealer support are very good and very accessible throughout The County . One hazard is expanding waistlines from the number of great places to eat , with menus of ployes , chicken stew , molasses donuts and poutines . No trail permits are needed but all snowmobiles must be registered with the State of Maine , with most of the money going into the trail fund to underwrite grooming . Non-residents have three options ; 3-day , 10-day , or full season registration . But what really sets the County apart are the people . They are simply the most friendly and most accommodating folks anywhere .
If you haven ’ t visited the County yet , it should most definitely be on your snowmobile vacation list . For more information , contact visitaroostook . com or visitmaine . net .
