Keep Exploring
BY JOHN T . PRUSAK / EDITOR
Snowmobiling attracts many different sorts of people for many different reasons . Some folks are horsepower junkies who are drawn in by the excellent power-to-weight ratios and incredible acceleration rates of the machines . Others see a snowmobile as a means to an end – their sled allows them to get themselves and their gear to a favorite ice fishing spot , or to a particularly tasty slope in the deep backcountry where they ’ ll unload their skis or snowboard . That ’ s all fine and good – I ’ ve come to appreciate all sorts of snowmobilers . Our Great Escapes digital magazine , though , is aimed at the vast majority of riders who use their machines for a physical and mental escape during the most beautiful time of the year . It ’ s focused on people who like to spend a day , weekend , week or more following a twisting white ribbon that carves a unique path through the woods , across fields , through swamps , over hills and down into valleys .
Snowmobilers know that , even when we ride on trails that we ’ re very familiar with , there are still often surprises out in the rural outback where most trails are found – like the occasional sighting of white tail deer or wild turkeys , tree branches magically outlined with hoarfrost or bowed because they are laden with fresh snow .
Better yet is the opportunity to ride somewhere new , where you truly never know what ’ s around the next corner or over the next hill . Maybe it ’ s a stunning scenic overlook , or a beautiful lake ; it could be a patch of white-trunked aspen trees , or something man-made , like the friendliest snowmobiling pitstop you ’ ve ever imagined .
To remind myself of the beauty and the surprises that are out there waiting for each of us , the background picture that I keep on my computer desktop is of a tree-lined snowmobile trail that features a short straightaway before the trail
curves off to the right and disappears . Because I took the picture , I know the exact spot where it was taken , but when I gaze at the photo I don ’ t think about that location – to me , the image represents any snowmobile trail anywhere .
Even in the summer , I can look at that picture and let my mind wander , and imagine what ’ s around that bend , and the one after it . That thought is what makes me want to keep exploring new territory . Hopefully the stories in this issue will do the same for you .
