Folks looking for “ a hidden gem ” when it comes to awesome western snowmobiling have a great new place to check out in Carbon County , Wyoming , where they invite to come and “ get your west on ” in style !
Easily accessible off of Interstate 80 yet located high atop the Continental Divide just west of Laramie in south-central Wyoming , Carbon County welcomes visitors with a variety of inns , lodges , resorts and guest ranches , many with direct trail access . Some also have unique attractions right on the premises – from fuel and dining all the way up to micro-breweries .
When it ’ s time to fire up the machines , local outfitters can provide everything you need – sleds , gear , guides and more . Or feel free to bring your own sled and gear , add a $ 35 state snowmobile permit and head for the excellent , deep-snow adventures . Riding elevations range from 6,000 to 11,000 feet , and air temperatures can vary greatly , so make sure you and your sled are properly prepared for the adventure of a lifetime .
The Carbon County area features excellent riding in three distinct snowmobiling areas , which when added together total more than 500 miles of trails plus access to vast amounts of outstanding backcountry riding in snow up to 12 feet deep .
The Snowy Range features the largest and most developed riding area , with 306 miles of trails plus great backcountry areas to explore . Accessible from Saratoga , Riverside , Encampment and Elk Mountain , this area has a full complement of trailside support services including lodging , dining and gas .
West of the Continental Divide , the Sierra Madres area offers another 110 miles of trails that let riders access off-trail playgrounds in snow up to eight feet deep – surrounded by some of the most dramatic mountain scenery anywhere . Access is available from Encampment on the east side or Baggs on the west .
In northern Carbon County , the Shirley Mountains offer extensive public land north of Hanna and Medicine Bow with remote backcountry riding that includes 90 miles of ungroomed trails .
Once the sleds are parked , there ’ s more to do in the area , with more than a dozen museums and other historic sites covering everything from ranching and railroading to western and military history . And , don ’ t miss a relaxing dip in Hobo Hot Springs at Saratoga – it ’ s free and never closes .
