When we left our sleds and slowly approached for a closer look , Martin spotted a third . We kept our distance , but the three felines didn ’ t seem to mind us much . The whole encounter lasted about five minutes , but what a thrill it was to see these furry predators up close .

After that encounter , the ride to Elk Lake was smooth sailing , much of it on a former rail line that featured a big iron bridge over the swiftly flowing Montreal River . From there , it wasn ’ t far to the Eco Centre , a multi-use building owned by the town of Elk Lake and open year-round to visitors .

Over lunch we chatted with manager Rick Guthrie and learned a little about the region and its history as a lumbering and mining center . The Eco Centre itself honors Jack Munroe , the founder of Elk Lake who had a distinguished life as a miner , boxer and veteran of World War I .

Although the unseasonable weather dampened our mileage ambitions , two days on the trail gave us a tasty sample of the outstanding trails and sights to enjoy throughout this region . If you love to ride , put this place on your list for future explorations !
