ROUGH & RUGGED … WISCONSIN ?
Jackson County has one of the most diverse landscapes you ’ ll find in the Upper Midwest . Its terrain was carved by a combination of prehistoric lakes , volcanoes and massive rivers , as well as glaciers and , importantly , near-misses with glaciers . That canvas is now painted by a large and expertly maintained trail network that makes it a fabulous snowmobiling destination .

ALASKA , THE “ GREAT LAND ”
Alaska is a bold and fascinating frontier that we had long dreamed of visiting . When we finally did , we discovered a seemingly endless land of wide rivers , mysterious glaciers and vast frozen swamps that were our powder-filled playgrounds . The warm people who served as our hosts contrasted this rugged backcountry .

Chase Your Dreams
BY JOHN T . PRUSAK / EDITOR
Dream snowmobiling vacations are often just a short pull away . Perhaps there ’ s a notable destination with renowned trails and breathtaking scenery that ’ s within a couple-hour drive of your home , cabin or usual riding areas – an experience waiting to be had .
If that ’ s the case , we say , “ Make a plan , and then make it happen .” It ’ s sometimes amazing what you ’ ll discover by just expanding your horizons a little bit .
That was the case with our journey to central Wisconsin that ’ s featured in this issue of Snow Goer ’ s Great Escapes . The rolling hills , rocky outcroppings and steep bluffs we found there were well beyond expectation , and the trails were spectacular .
On the flip side , there are those instances where you may plan for years in advance of an epic adventure to a truly extraordinary location . We ’ ve got two of them in this special edition of Great Escapes as well .
Quebec may not be far from every snowmobiler , especially those in the Northeast . But whether you ’ re coming from central New York or central Nebraska , there is something truly unique about snowmobiling in Quebec . Is it the rich French-Canadian culture and cuisine ? The impeccably groomed trail system that ’ s second to none ? Or perhaps it ’ s the diverse landscapes , from Eastern mountains to prairies , dense forest to spectacular ocean views ? The answer is yes to all of the above .
On the other end of the spectrum lies Alaska , rightfully known as “ The Last Frontier .” It is incredibly vast and mostly unsettled , allowing visitors to feel like true explorers – though in this case , they ’ d be trading the ships , canoes and horses of old for more entertaining and capable snowmobiles .
Riding in Alaska is the polar opposite of what you ’ d experience in most other “ established ” snowmobiling states , as most trails are rarely , if ever , groomed . Yet the sheer magnitude of the country ’ s largest state plus its distance from the rest of us makes it seem exotic . Towering mountains , expansive rivers and endless frozen swamps are just the start . Even with many preconceived notions and expectations , riding in Alaska still completely blew-away then Managing Editor Andy Swanson when he embarked on a guided tour there .
We hope these three adventure stories will inspire you to plan your own escape . That ’ s the mission Snow Goer ’ s Great Escapes – to encourage fellow riders to elevate their enjoyment of the sport by exploring more of North America ’ s 230,000 miles of trails , along with the millions of acres of backcountry where snowmobiling is permitted .
Go ahead and make your dreams come true !
