The Lumberjack Tavern is decorated with yellowed newspaper clippings , black-and-white photographs from the movie ’ s filming and even a dark outline on the floor where Chenoweth ’ s lifeless body fell .
On our way out , a patron told us how Big Bay was also a hangout of Henry Ford , and that he sent favored executives to vacation at the town ’ s Thunder Bay Inn as a perk . While Ford loved Big Bay ’ s surroundings , his mill wasn ’ t profitable and closed in 1949 after his death .

Pressing On

Back on our sleds , we aimed for the adjacent frozen shores of Lake Superior . As a sizable half- the town , we rode out on the moon bay flanks lake ’ s ice for a panoramic view of this curious hamlet — a large , abandoned smokestack on the harbor and quaint houses surrounded by the Huron Mountains .
Returning to the Trail 14 heading west toward L ’ Anse , we rode through the heart of the Hurons , rolling trails with great views , and passed by Mount Arvon , which is Michigan ’ s highest point at 1,979 feet . With their limited elevation , the Huron Mountains will never be confused with the Rockies , Black Hills or even the Appalachians , yet their short peaks dot the horizon , while granite-
