After dropping the essentials at the trailside Best Western , we hopped on Trail 8 heading west of town . After 20 minutes on this straight , snow-covered expressway , we turned north on Trail 5 through a no-man ’ s land punctuated by a beautiful ( in the eye of the beholder ) abandoned factory complete with a rusting water tower , periodic exposed bedrock formations and a peaceful swamp crossing up to an intersection with Trail 14 . We cut east on 5 / 14 heading toward the quaint lakeside village of Big Bay .
