The real payoff , though , was at the top , where we parked our sleds , followed a very short walking path and found ourselves suddenly at the edge of a cliff ! Flag Mountain sits at 6,937 feet and , equally notable , it sits very high above the lower Reynolds Prairie immediately to its east , making it seem even more startling high than Cement Ridge , for example . From the stone remnants of a fire tower stand , it seemed like we ’ d be able to see the start of a bonfire in Kentucky when looking east , while gandering off in the other directions we spotted other famous Black Hills peaks , including the 7,000-foot Sylvan Peak ( southeast ), 7,164-foot Green Mountain ( south ) and 7,064-foot Terry Peak ( north ).
We climbed around on the rocks at this high point to get different perspectives on the surrounding scenes and gazed at a dilapidated mine shaft building at the top before becoming distracted by the movements of something tiny in an open meadow off to our lower right . “ Is that an animal ? A pickup ? Is it a groomer ? Here come two more … hey , those are snowmobiles ! I wonder where they are going ?!” We had to find out .
Remounting our sleds , we zoomed back down the spur trail , hung a left on the main trail and twisted our way through a large rolling meadow until we came to the charming Mt . Meadow Resort , where the fuel pumps outside and the kitchen inside
