In the fall of 1875 , a rich strain of gold was discovered in a gulch lined with dead trees in the northern Black Hills , increasing the intensity of the gold rush specifically in the soon-to-be-plotted town of Deadwood ( remember the dead trees ?), and mining in what now is known as the Deadwood Gulch .
After confirming that the snow would allow riding right out of the Deadwood – the unquestioned entertainment capital of the Black Hills – we reserved rooms at the Deadwood Gulch Gaming Resort , which has Trail 7 bisecting its parking lot .
