By the time we got back to the Pub & Grub for dinner , we were approaching 200 miles on the day , but the exploration on smooth trails didn ’ t make it tiring . Back at the Woodside Cottages a bit later , we ignited the gas fireplace and emptied beer bottles in supreme comfort while we shared stories from the day .

It was going to be hard to top day 2 of our trip , but Dick seemed determined . On a warm day with bright blue skies , Dick first led us to a rugged area with a tall fire tower atop the highest hill east of Valhalla . We could also see the area that used to house a big , Olympic-style ski jump . Next , we headed north and east . The first major stop of the small city of Red Cliff , aptly named because it is home to the Red Cliff Band of Lake Superior Chippewa . That also makes it home to the huge , relatively new Legendary Waters Resort & Casino .
The “ stay on trail ” sign in the Bayfield Peninsula is intended to prevent trespassing on private land , but it doesn ’ t actually mean that you can ’ t leave the formal trails , as the spiderweb of forest roads is open to snowmobiling traffic .
