clients are first-time or less-frequent visitors to the mountains . For these western riding novices , guides like Greg spend the first day taking them to powdery meadows , up moderate climbs and using the relative “ easy way ” up to incredible overlooks like St . Charles Peak , where people can easily see into three states on a clear day .
These riders tend to get stuck quite often , but the guides are always quick to the scene to help them out . “ I try to be the first one to them ,” Greg said . “ They ’ ll have a lot more fun if they are not worried about getting stuck , so I want to be there to help them out and encourage them .”
The guides are always gauging the riders evolving skills , Greg said , and as the week goes on and confidence improves , riders in the right frame of mind can be led on increasingly adventurous rides , into chutes and canyons that blow their minds .
