Hahn ’ s Peak Roadhouse – our lodging location for the next two nights . Fresh snow was thigh deep in their parking lot as we waded into the main lodge . Crews there were hurriedly trying to keep up with the snowfall , yet we still got our F-150 stuck trying to reach our nearby , luxurious cabin . After getting bunked in , another couple of feet of snow fell on our truck overnight . I ’ d experienced snow storms in the past , but nothing like this !
“ They said 3 to 5 inches in the forecast , but it seems like that ’ s always when we get the snow in feet ,” Darren Zamzow , then the coowner of Hahn ’ s Peak , said during a plowing break .
Shortly after daybreak , we headed to the Columbine parking lot / trailhead about seven miles up the road to meet our partners for this adventure .
John Asta arrived first . He ’ s a former professional snowboarder who more recently discovered and fell in love with deep-powder snowmobiling . He eyed up the boys ’ snowboards , which we last used at a Minnesota terrain park . “ You ’ re going to want to move those binding all the way to the back ,” he informed them , noting that , in big powder conditions like this , floating the boards ’ nose atop the surface was key .
