Tingle Your Senses
BY JOHN T . PRUSAK / EDITOR
Snowmobiling is something that fires up all my senses . The wondrous sights of a winter landscape combined with the performance sound of the engine that ’ s often muffled by the whistle of the self-generated wind are obvious to anybody who has tried the sport .
The “ touch ” sense is easy to define as well , and it occurs in many different ways – from the way a human body interacts with the ergonomic designs of the machine to the g-force feeling of acceleration .
The “ smell ” and “ taste ” senses are a little bit harder to define , but they ’ re there – whether it ’ s the two-stroke scent that some of us still enjoy , the unique tinge of the cool , crisp air or , frankly , the smell of well-worn riding gear . It ’ s certainly not like hockey gear , but there ’ s a scent there – admit it ! And who doesn ’ t like a tasty meal at a trailside pitstop midway through a day of riding ?
There are other ways those senses and others are stimulated on big snowmobiling trips , like the ones highlighted in this issue of Snow Goer ’ s Great Escapes .
In Quebec , author Nick Longworth certainly got to challenge his sense of taste on a gourmet tour across Canada ’ s most exotic province . But there ’ s also a “ sense ” of kinship that one feels when getting involved in an organized tour . Folks who are complete strangers on day one of the journey become faithful friends when you spend four days and nights sharing a wondrous experience .
In Colorado , me and my traveling companions sparked up many “ senses ” along the way – from the sense of adventure and exploration to , at times , the sense of dread when stuck in armpit-deep powder ! Luckily we had some local guides who could help make the trip especially memorable .
Crossing Minnesota ’ s lake country with author Tom Kaiser plus some other folks years ago , I experienced the sense of comforting familiarity , on various levels . I hadn ’ t
previously ridden all of the trails that we experienced on that jaunt ( but I had been on many of them ), and I hadn ’ t previously pulled together that group of friends ( although I ’ d ridden with each of them individually ), but everything about the trip fit like a glove .
Like always in Great Escapes , the stories in this issues were previously printed in Snow Goer magazine , and are being pulled together in this special digital edition to encourage folks to create their own escapes aboard a sled .
This winter , tingle all of your senses with your own snowmobiling excursions . You won ’ t regret it .
