Lobbying for LIHEAP
Lobbying for the continuation of the Low Income Home Energy Assistance Program has become a year-to-year activity
STEPHEN BENNETT in recent years, with industry trade groups and the National
Energy Assistance Directors Association( NEADA) leading the way. And that is what is happening again with the Trump administration’ s proposed Fiscal Year 2027 budget. NEADA reports the proposed spending plan would eliminate $ 4 billion in funding for LIHEAP, cutting off vital support to approximately 6 million low-income households that rely on the program to afford home heating and cooling.
Mark Wolfe, executive director of NEADA, said“ Low-income families need support now more than ever. I am deeply disappointed that the Administration is proposing to eliminate LIHEAP funding. Families are already struggling with rising energy costs and as gasoline, food, and heating oil prices surge due to the war in Iran, this is absolutely the wrong time to cut energy assistance to some of the poorest families in the nation.”

INDUSTRY TO CONGRESS: PROTECT HOME HEATING OIL PRESERVE NEFI reports that it led a broad coalition of state and regional associations in urging Congress to advance the Bolstering the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve Act( H. R. 6933) in a letter to Speaker Johnson, Majority Leader Thune, and Minority Leaders Jeffries and Schumer.
The Trump Administration previously called for the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve( NEHHOR) to be shuttered and that the proceeds be used to reduce the federal deficit, NEFI noted in its April 7 newsletter to members. The letter, dated April 1, and signed by all federal, state, and local heating oil associations in the Northeast, reads in part:
“ This bipartisan legislation offers a commonsense alternative to the Administration’ s proposal to close the Northeast Home Heating Oil Reserve( NEHHOR). We respectfully urge you to advance this legislation and to reject any effort to eliminate the Reserve.
Our organizations represent hundreds of multigenerational family businesses that deliver liquid heating fuels to nearly five million homes and small businesses across the Northeast. The families and communities we serve depend on a reliable supply of heating fuel each winter, and the NEHHOR was created to ensure that supply remains available even in times of disruption.” For more, turn to the News section, beginning on page 6. l FON
