OF WATER AND AIR
WATER USAGE AND AIR QUALITY are matters that we must pay closer attention to , based on my observations and conversations with people in the industry .
Think of the gallons of water wasted in the course of our everyday life . One example is the water wasted while waiting for the shower to get to a desirable temperature . Say shower heads are rated 2.5 gallons and up . Now imagine four or five family members each waiting for two or three minutes for the hot water to get to the shower which could add up to several hundred gallons of water wasted during this time period . You might ask , What can I do to be more conservative in my water usage ?
Years ago , plumbers would install a recirculation line in the domestic hot water piping with a small bronze circulator that would keep the water moving within the hot water loop , which
Many companies have added water filtration to their list of services . in turn would give the homeowner immediate hot water . Did you ever wonder how the large hotels get immediate hot water up several stories to the shower ? The answer would most likely be the installation of a special booster pump .
Keep in mind that most cities and towns bill for every gallon of water including waste water and over the course of a year that can add up to a hefty amount of money . I have also had people tell me they never get a water bill . Why ? Because they are on a well . I ’ m also on a well , but I , along with my family , understand the need to conserve . I know the cost of replacing a septic system where 100 % of all my waste water goes .
So , what can a homeowner do to reduce water waste ? This is a topic that most homeowners pay little attention to , so getting them to change their behavior takes a little salesmanship . First , give them an overview about wasted water . Then explain that there are devices that can be attached to existing systems that are simple to install and will help reduce the amount water going through the municipal system and , in turn , the charges to the homeowner . This helps pay for the devices , too .
The systems that I ’ m aware of use some type of bypass device installed between the hot- and cold-water valves located under the furthest sink from the hot water supply . Keep in mind that many companies have added water filtration to their list of services over the past few years that has resulted in added revenue . You may find that your equipment supplier has diversified into the water system business and has an in-house specialist to support you in this new area of sales . The subject of clean air is also something that is overlooked and a subject that the average homeowner may not be familiar with , but another revenue generator .
There are many devices that help to improve air quality in the home and at the same time bring comfort to some who suffer from allergies . For example , electronic air cleaning or air purification systems . However , some units do not measure particles that need to be eliminated . The standard warm air furnace filter will only remove particles larger than approximately 5 microns in size and tests have shown that 5 microns only accounts for . 18 % of the particles in the air we breathe daily . The remaining 1.32 % are mid- size and 98.5 % are sub-microscopic . Tests performed by certified agencies have shown that the air quality in the average home can be as much as 70 times more contaminated than the air outside the home . Also keep in mind in a standard 2,600-sq . -ft . home with a warm air furnace , the air only passes through the filter about four times per day , when it should be about 10 times per day . A key factor in any air quality device is making sure that the system you recommend is sized correctly and maintained properly . l FON
