Renewables in NYC
New York City awarded Approved Oil Co ., Brooklyn , N . Y ., a contract to supply renewable diesel to the fleets of various New York City agencies , including Sanitation , Police , Fire , Environmental Protection , Transportation , Parks and Recreation , and Correction .
“ By powering these essential agency fleets with renewable diesel , Approved Oil Company is playing a pivotal role in driving down
STEPHEN BENNETT carbon emissions and contributing to the realization of New York City ’ s ambitious green initiatives ,” the company said in a statement .
The renewable diesel is derived from renewable sources such as vegetable oils , animal fats , and used cooking oil . It is molecularly the same as petroleum-based diesel and it meets ASTM International ’ s standard for Diesel Fuel Oils ( D-975 ), Approved Oil said . The fuel provides a seamless transition for existing diesel engines operated by the city , emitting fewer pollutants and greenhouse gasses than conventional diesel , the company noted . Industry Assails Use of DPA for Heat Pumps
The Biden Administration has invoked the 1950 Defense Production Act ( DPA ) to expedite funding toward increasing the domestic production of heat pumps . The Administration cited the use of these wartime powers in order to meet the emergency crisis confronting the nation due to climate change . The release of $ 169 million will be directed to nine projects to accelerate electric heat pump manufacturing at 15 sites across the country .
Industry groups “ are looking into the legality of using the DPA in this manner , as well as the administration ’ s broader attack on consumer choice ,” the New York State Energy Coalition said in its member newsletter , NYSEC Voice . “ There is a strong possibility that this use of the DPA may be litigated .” See more in News .
Connecticut Withdraws EV Plan
Connecticut withdrew a plan that called for the state to follow California ’ s electric vehicle mandates . The Connecticut Energy Marketers Association noted that in withdrawing the plan , Connecticut was backing away from California ’ s EV mandates for mediumand heavy-duty trucks and consumer passenger vehicles . In doing so , Connecticut became the first state to pull back from the plan for both trucks and consumer passenger vehicles , according to CEMA .
The proposed regulations were withdrawn by Gov . Ned Lamont in late November , shortly before the legislature ’ s Regulation Review Committee was scheduled to vote on them , news outlets reported . Lamont and the Connecticut Department of Energy and Environmental Protection had proposed the regulations only four months earlier , on July 26 , to make cars and trucks up to 90 % cleaner and to require vehicle manufacturers to deliver more zero-emission vehicles to the state .
