SIMPLE TRICKS

One of the most expensive control replacements out there is for an oil-fired furnace with air conditioning that uses a Honeywell R8184M , Figure 1 . Both Beckett and Carlin have addressed this problem by producing conversion kits introduced as the Beckett AC Ready Kit , Figure 2 , and Carlin ’ s Kool-Kit , Figure 3 . The great part about both of these kits is that you can get rid of the R8184M and

Figure 3 in the future just replace the 40VA transformer or the primary control of your choice .
About the only negative with these bases is that they don ’ t always line up easily with the existing burner “ J-box ” currently on the burner . What ends up happening is the mess in Figure 4 . True , the guy who did this is Harry Hackarama , truly doesn ’ t give a crap about his work and is demeaning to all of us . So , I offer the following idea . Not new to many , but evidently will come as a genius of an idea to the hacks . Simply the addition of an “ extension box ”, Figure 5 . The extension box ( or ring ) will increase the height to clear any obstacle , double the wiring work space and give you more fitting knockout holes than anybody could ever need . Now you can easily mount and wire any control you want and possibly add some great features like interrupted ignition and purges . Cost of the “ ring ” is under two dollars and even cheaper in quantity , a great inexpensive time and aggravation saver .
I really love interrupted ignition and all of its benefits but some keep fighting the technology , that ’ s just stupid and stubborn in my opinion . If you still have doubts and have a copy of my Advanced Residential Oilburners book or a copy of the NORA Oilheat Technicians Manual do some reading , please .
Another add on , with a control change , could be the purges , pre-purge , also now known as “ valve on delay ” and post-purge , also known as “ motor off delay .” There are a lot of ways to add pre-purge today so let ’ s look at some of them .
One of the easiest ways to add the pre-purge is through the use of an oil valve . One of my favorites is the Suntec R Series valve , with a Beckett PD Timer . The Suntec R Series is a fast and easy way to get an oil valve onto an existing pump with a minimum of piping changes . Basically , it ’ s just a matter of moving the connector tube fitting from the pump to the valve . The PD ( Precision Delay ) Timer cord set is a direct replacement for standard Suntec oil burner solenoid valve
Figure 4
cord sets but contains electronics that provide a precise 4-second delay before the valve coil is energized each and every start-up . It is designed to plug into 120 VAC solenoid valves such as the Beckett / Delta F84 valve and the CleanCut and Suntec valves , to provide a valve-on delay with primary controls that do not provide the delay . You could also use the Suntec A2VA-3006B , if a pump change may also be warranted due to a fuel change such as going from B5 to a B20 mix .
Finally , there ’ s the “ big step up .” A six-wire purging control . These are more commonly known as the Beckett GeniSys , the Carlin ProX ( 70200 ), and the Honeywell R7284 . With these controls you
now have interrupted ignition and fully programmable delays and diagnostic troubleshooting . Once
Figure 5
you get into using the diagnostics on these controls you start to realize just how great the technology truly is and why it ’ s always better to work smarter , not harder .
