U. S. Route 550 meanders for 305 miles from Bernalillo, New Mexico, to Montrose, Colorado. The 23-mile stretch in Colorado between the historic mining towns of Silverton and Ouray is known as the Million Dollar Highway. Exactly why it’ s called that is a matter of debate— some say that’ s how much it cost to build the road, some say it’ s the price paid for the land and others say it’ s the value of the ore-bearing fill used as road base. Why it was named is less important than what it is, which is a wonderfully serpentine road through the Rocky Mountains with million-dollar views, especially the sections that pass through the deep Uncompaghre Gorge and over 11,018-foot Red Mountain Pass. Stormy weather has a way of amplifying its grandeur, as was the case during the cross-country Sisters’ Centennial Motorcycle Ride in July 2016.
