Above: High up on Wildrose Canyon Road, which climbs the western side of the Panamint Mountains, are the Wildrose Charcoal Kilns. Built in 1877, the 10 beehive-shaped masonry kilns are the bestpreserved examples in the West. Pinyon pine logs were burned in the kilns to create charcoal, which was transported 25 miles away to smelters near leadsilver mines in the Argus Range. From the kilns you can hike up to a saddle where you can see Badwater Basin and Mount Whitney from the same spot.
