Above: With an old Joshua tree standing guard, Paul and Marten cruise along Saline Valley Road, which serves as the western boundary of Death Valley National Park before turning to the northeast and climbing up to 5,997-foot South Pass. The road then drops down into Saline Valley and passes by a salt lake, sand dunes and hot springs. Left: At South Pass, we turned onto Hunter Mountain Road and rode over the 7,100-foot summit, where we stopped to look west and admire the snow-capped Sierra Nevada. After a tricky descent into Hidden Valley, a deep patch of sand caught me off-guard.
