Iron Butt Kate
Many of us dream of riding to Alaska. But for Kate Johnston, riding to Alaska wasn’ t enough. With only three years of riding experience under her belt, in 2014 she became the first woman to complete the Iron Butt Association’ s Ultimate Coast to Coast to Coast Insanity ride, which requires the rider to go from Key West, Florida, to Prudhoe Bay, Alaska, and back to Key West, within 30 days. Johnston completed the ride in 24 days( it rained for 20 of them), covering 10,767 miles. This photo was taken on the Dalton Highway, a 414-mile, unpaved supply road that crosses the Arctic Circle on its way north to Deadhorse, where Johnston was plagued by rain, dense fog, mud that chewed up her BMW’ s chain and the only crash of her entire journey( a minor one, thankfully).
