valued and empowered ”
– Kathie Durbin
I am grateful that I have had so many incredible mentors . One of my most influential mentors was Marcia Harris , the late executive director of the Restaurant Association of Maryland . She played a pivotal role in my life and career , especially during the transition when the state association integrated my position as executive director from the local restaurant association into one statewide group .
Marcia ’ s leadership in the hospitality industry was inspiring , and she helped me move from being a local leader to taking on a statewide role . Her guidance was invaluable , helping me explore various roles in the alcohol beverage space .
HAVE YOU BEEN A MENTOR TO OTHERS ?
Yes , as a woman in the alcohol beverage industry , I understand the unique challenges and opportunities that come with this role . Leading by example and providing support to my colleagues is essential , especially in a field that has been traditionally male dominated .
I strive to create an inclusive environment where everyone feels valued and empowered to contribute their best . Continuing efforts to support and mentor women , alongside robust diversity , equity and inclusion ( DEI ) policies , are essential for maintaining momentum and fostering inclusivity . Montgomery County takes pride in being one of the most diverse jurisdictions in the nation , and we as a community are committed to celebrating and harnessing the strength of our diversity .
HAVE YOU FACED CHALLENGES AS A WOMAN IN A LEADERSHIP POSITION IN WHAT ’ S STILL A MALE- DOMINATED INDUSTRY ?
Initially , there were stereotypes to contend with , working the front of the house waiting tables and bartending . I loved connecting with others and began building a strong network . Over time , proving my expertise and competence , along with bringing an innovative approach , helped me gain respect and credibility and soon I was managing restaurants .
My experiences in hospitality helped shape my approach as I transitioned to a leadership role in alcohol regulation . As director of an agency that oversees the regulation , distribution and sale of alcohol beverage , I continue to prioritize innovation and diversity of thought through a supportive environment .
HOW HAS YOUR COMPANY BENEFITED FROM HAVING WOMEN AT THE TABLE MAKING DECISIONS ?
I believe women in leadership roles bring diverse perspectives and approaches that lead to more innovative solutions . At Alcohol Beverage Services , we focus on enhanced team cohesion , customer service , and community engagement .
This has resulted in a positive culture shift and the successful implementation of initiatives such as the local alcohol manufacturer program , increased availability of highly allocated and diverse products , and community events .
DO YOU THINK THE BEVERAGE ALCOHOL INDUSTRY HAS IMPROVED AS FAR AS WOMEN AND GENDER DEI IN THE PAST FIVE YEARS ?
Yes , I believe the beverage alcohol industry has made significant strides in gender DEI in the past five years . We ’ ve seen more women in leadership roles , greater recognition of women ' s contributions , and increased focus on creating inclusive work environments .
The industry has seen many changes in general in the past five years , which has helped to accelerate progress in DEI . However , there is still some work to be done . Continuing to address systematic barriers and ensuring that these changes are sustainable remains crucial .
WHAT ADVICE DO YOU HAVE FOR PEOPLE ( WOMEN IN PARTICULAR ) LOOKING TO GET INTO THE BEVERAGE ALCOHOL INDUSTRY ?

Networking and meaningful relationships are invaluable ; hold on to your authenticity while striving to be better . Finally , be true to your values and vision and you will always find a seat at the alcohol beverage industry “ table !”
