WINTER BREAK

THE HOLIDAY SEASON always seems to come up fast — right after Halloween , if not before . The celebratory period generally goes from Thanksgiving through New Year ’ s , and then the holiday hangover often sets in , and for many , the winter blues . What can you do to extend a little of that holiday sparkle into the rest of winter ? We have a few ideas .
Instead of hibernating , make an effort to gather with friends and family . Invite people into your winter world for a drink or a meal . Gather round the fireplace if you have one , and if you don ’ t , put one on the computer or TV !
We ’ ve included some terrific holiday and winter cocktails to warm up the season on page 6 . If daytime gatherings are more your thing this time of year , check out our brunch cocktails on page 13 .
For a unique idea for a dinner party , wine expert and certified sommelier Sarah Tracey shares a menu that pairs well with port and port cocktails . The dishes also include a little of the fortified wine as an ingredient ; see page 12 for more .
Winter is a great time to learn something new , so why not brush up on your wine knowledge ? Our Deep Dive column on page 9 delves into the world of natural wine . And in our Vinsights column on page 10 , Marnie Old explains the different methods of making sparking wine , which also helps explain the vast different in prices .
To try out some new wines , see our wine panel ’ s reviews on page 14 . For this issue , they rated different wines from all over America .
And if you ’ re ready to take your mixology to a new level , you can have some fun fat-washing spirits . See page 11 for what this is and how to do it .
The dead of winter can seem a bit grim after the glitz and glamour of the holidays , but it ’ s also a time to slow down and enjoy the simple pleasures of life . Make a point to get out in nature , and find time to do something that you love to do . Connect with other people and gather to share delicious meals and drinks that celebrate the season .
And never fear , spring will be here before you know it .
Cheers !
