MANY PEOPLE TEND to dread winter , especially after the excitement of the holiday season dies down . The cold , dark days can become somewhat oppressive , especially when you feel confined to your house by inclement weather .

What to do ? We suggest embracing the winter and leaning into creature comforts . Aim to practice hygge , the Danish and Norwegian word in that describes a mood of coziness and “ comfortable conviviality ” with feelings of wellness and contentment .

How ? Warm cocktails are a good start ; see page 10 for some tips and recipes for hot drinks , whether you ’ re making them for a crowd or for a quiet night at home by the fire . ( You ’ ll also find plenty of other seasonal libations to mix up on page 6 .)

Not drinking this January , or at all ? No problem — nonalcoholic drinks have come a long way . Professionals offer their secrets to delicious spirit-free cocktails on page 14 .

Another way to break up the winter monotony : Break out of your kitchen comfort zone and try cooking some recipes or cuisines that are new to you .
