BEVERAGES IN BLOOM
IT ’ S FINALLY VERY NEARLY SPRING , and we couldn ’ t be happier about it . There ’ s nothing like the sense of renewal and optimism like the sprouting of plants and budding of blossoms , not to mention warmer and longer days .
We ’ ve amassed some gorgeous spring cocktail recipes for this issue . You may notice that a number of them use flowers as garnishes , from fresh pansies to dried rose petals . Floral garnishes are a surefire way to elevate your cocktails for an elegant birthday or brunch celebration , or just to spruce up a drink any time . For more tips on garnishes , see page 12 .
Speaking of brunch , Brennan ’ s restaurant in New Orleans shares a wonderful brunch cocktail pairing : Eggs Hussarde with a Strawberry Sparkler cocktail . Eggs Hussarde , created in the 1950s by Brennan ’ s chef Paul Blangé , is a take on Eggs Benedict that combines classic hollandaise and marchand du vin ( French for “ wine merchant ”) red wine sauce . The Strawberry Sparkler is similar to a Mimosa but with a homemade strawberry basil syrup — delicious !
We also offer specialty recipes for St . Patrick ’ s Day drinks , some with Irish whiskey , others with vodka , tequila , gin and more . While several cocktails are subtle shades of green , it ’ s not just the results of green food coloring . Rather , ingredients such as matcha tea , honeydew melon and basil add verdant color and fresh flavor .
