2021 DRINK RESPONSIBLY
IOWA ’ S I-PACT IS ONLINE
The Iowa ABD ’ s program for alcohol compliance training ( PACT ) allows employees of licensees in the state to receive certification . The goal of I-PACT is increased voluntary compliance with the state ’ s alcohol laws through education and enforcement . The core objective of the program is to prevent illegal sales by educating sellers and increasing awareness of changes in the state ’ s liquor laws .
The content focuses on spotting altered or invalid IDs , preventing underage sales and sales to intoxicated patrons . Participants learn techniques for refusing the sale of alcohol with minimal confrontation and how to confiscate a fake ID . It also includes regulations and tips for offsite delivery of alcohol .
RAISE A GLASS RESPONSIBLY IN OHIO
The Ohio Division of Liquor Control encourages residents to raise a glass responsibly in recognition of April being Alcohol Awareness Month . Throughout the month , the division ’ s Facebook page will share educational resources to address alcohol awareness , promote mindful consumption and offer non-alcoholic alternatives to popular cocktails .
“ Alcohol Awareness Month is a time to be thoughtful about alcohol consumption ,” Superintendent Jim Canepa said . “ This campaign reinforces our goal of promoting social responsibility with alcohol .”
The division conducts regular trainings to ensure permit holders are reminded alcohol is not to be sold to anyone who ’ s intoxicated or under 21 .
“ We have a responsibility to keep all Ohioans safe ,” said DOC Director Sheryl Maxfield . “ While we permit and license businesses that sell alcohol , we are also responsible for educating them on the dangers of alcohol and overconsumption .”
With warmer weather ahead , including proms , graduations and cookout season , the division reminds parents of a great opportunity to have conversations with kids about making safe and smart decisions . Children are influenced by friends , teachers and celebrities — but parents are the leading influence on kids ’ relationship with alcohol .
VA GOVERNOR DESIGNATES ALCOHOL
AWARENESS MONTH
Virginia Governor Ralph Northam officially recognized April as Alcohol Awareness Month , issuing a proclamation on the need to increase public awareness and understanding about the dangers associated with alcohol misuse .
“ We ’ re grateful to the governor ’ s recognition ,” said ABC Authority CEO Travis Hill . “ We welcome the opportunity to highlight our work to address the dangers associated with the misuse of alcohol and build the capacity of communities throughout Virginia to encourage a responsible approach when it comes to consumption of alcoholic beverages .”
The ABC Authority has developed a variety of programs , resources and toolkits for adults and youth to address alcohol misuse and encourage responsible behaviors . Educational programs for elementary to college-age youth target prevention efforts and community partnerships , which are critical to helping communities combat underage drinking .
ENCOURAGING MODERATION IN MICHIGAN
The Michigan DHHS Director Elizabeth Hertel and Michigan LCC Chair Pat Gagliardi urged Michiganders to moderate their drinking in recognition of April as Alcohol Awareness Month . The commission says the average Michigan resident consumed 956 alcoholic drinks in 2020 , or an average of 18 per week . Excessive alcohol use leads to approximately 3,200 deaths annually in the state according to the MDHHS .
“ Alcohol is a controlled substance ,” said MLCC Chair Pat Gagliardi . “ I implore parents to set a good example for their kids about alcohol use . Talk to your kids about the dangers of underage drinking ; drinking and driving and health issues attributable to drinking in excess . These are important lessons that can save lives and last a lifetime .”
