Keith Perfect
Director of Technology & Intelligence , Northrop & Johnson
What first drew you to the marine industry ? Having grown up in Fort Lauderdale , Fla ., boating has always been a significant part of my life . I have found memories of going boating with friends , attending Sea Camp in the Keys , and participating in the Boat Parade . In my 20s , I worked for an IT service provider that catered to the marine industry . Through my interactions with numerous marine companies , I realized that this was the industry I was passionate about . What was your first job ? In middle school , I had a job at a toy store where I would buy and sell Pokémon cards for the store . What accomplishment are you most proud of ? I take immense pride in having established the technology department at Northrop & Johnson , and I am equally proud of the exceptional achievements my team have made .
As a young professional , what are the biggest challenges you ’ ve faced in the marine industry and how did you overcome them ? The marine industry has been slow to adopt technology , as many still prefer to stick to traditional methods , " The way we have always done it .” However , this can be overcome by emphasizing the benefits of technology , developing the most user-friendly tech possible , and exercising patience . Learning modern technology can be a daunting task for some , so extreme patience when onboarding is key . Helping others recognize the value of technology is one of my favorite skills . How do you set goals for yourself and set yourself up for success ? I use the objectives and key results ( OKRs ) framework . It works by setting a few ambitious goals , each with several key results . You can then focus on making progress towards each key result rather than the actual goal . By breaking down large goals into smaller , more manageable pieces , OKRs help you stay focused on what matters most and make measurable progress towards the overall goal .
Who was your hero as a child ? My Grandfather . Why should young professionals choose a career in the marine industry ? The marine industry is constantly evolving . This makes it a dynamic and exciting industry to work in , with new challenges and opportunities to learn . It is also an incredibly fun industry to work in .
