Looking at ages of buyers within the study of the pontoon market , Baby Boomers ( those born between 1946 – 1964 ) represent the largest share of purchases at 44 %, with an average unit price of $ 60,529 , indicating strong purchasing power . Generation X ( 1965 – 1979 ) follows closely , contributing 38 % of purchases and showing the highest average unit price at $ 61,994 . Millennials ( 1980 – 1995 ), despite being a younger demographic , account for 16 % of total purchases , with a lower average price of $ 52,583 . Generation Z ( 1996 – Current ), the newest entrants into the market , make up a minimal 2 % of purchases with the lowest average unit price of $ 46,974 . This data highlights the dominant influence of older generations in the market while reflecting the gradual entry of younger buyers with lower spending capabilities .
Exits and entrances
One of the larger pieces of news surrounding the pontoon segment over the last year was BRP Inc .’ s announcement that it would be selling its pontoon brand , Manitou ( as well as its other boat brands , Alumacraft and Telwater ).
BRP said that in light of the challenging economic context , the company has decided to channel its efforts and investments towards its Powersports Year- Round Products , Seasonal Products , Parts , Accessories and Apparel portfolio ,
as well as its Original Equipment Manufacturer ( OEM ) Engine business .
“ After careful consideration and given the current dynamics of both the Marine and Powersports industries , we have decided to double down on our core Powersports activities and to sell our Marine businesses ,” BRP President and CEO José Boisjoli said at the time of the announcement . “ Over the past few years , we have built a solid foundation by investing in the development of innovative Marine products and upgrading the production facilities . As such , we believe that these iconic brands can offer attractive value creation opportunities for a new owner .”
BRP said it expects this process to be completed in the first quarter of Fiscal Year 2026 .
Despite placing its Manitou pontoon brand for sale , BRP continues to stake its name in the pontoon segment and reinvent what a pontoon can look like and do with its Sea-Doo branded Switch .
For model year 2025 , Sea-Doo doubled down on its Switch pontoon platform , debuting the Sea-Doo Switch Fish .
