SUSTAINABILITY
STRATEGIC MARITIME FUELS
A Field Guide
RENEWABLE DIESEL( HVO) Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil is a drop-in replacement for fossil diesel that requires no engine modifications and can be blended at any ratio. Unlike biodiesel, it performs reliably in cold weather and is free of sulfur, oxygen and aromatic compounds. Greenhouse gas reduction: up to 75 %.
PARTIALLY RENEWABLE GASOLINE Renewable feedstocks such as corn, sugar cane or cellulosic sugars are fermented to produce alcohol, which is then used to create an ethanol-free gasoline blend stock. When mixed with conventional gasoline, it reduces fossil fuel dependency per gallon. Greenhouse gas reduction: up to 30 % more than E10 at equivalent renewable content.
BIOBUTANOL A high-energy-content alcohol produced through fermentation. Unlike ethanol, biobutanol doesn’ t phase-separate in the presence of water, making it well-suited to the marine environment. It also lowers evaporative emissions and doesn’ t require an EPA vapor pressure waiver. Greenhouse gas reduction: up to 30 % versus conventional gasoline.
LIQUID DROP-IN EFUELS Produced by combining atmospheric carbon capture with green hydrogen through a Fischer-Tropsch synthesis process, these fuels result in a carbon-neutral liquid that is a 1:1 replacement for gasoline or diesel, usable in any existing engine with no modification.
