TIAN LEWIS
Region Manager & WSET Educator, Twin Liquors
Age: 35 First Industry Job: My first industry job was with my current company on the sales floor, slinging great bottles of wine and spirits! Favorite Drink: Wine is my passion through and through. I have a particular love for white Bordeaux from Pessac-Leognan, though when having cocktails you can’ t beat a classic gin martini with a twist.
Wine education has become an important part of the career of Twin Liquors’ Tian Lewis. He spearheaded the founding and launch of an official WSET course program offered by employer that he also serves as the educator of for the past few years. He pursued his education credentials of his own volition and has set the framework to make a fruitful career in the BevAlc space more readily available to those fortunate to work with him.
“ One of the biggest career challenges I’ ve faced was developing a new market segment for the company,” Lewis says.“ With every new store we build and community we enter, we have learned how better to position ourselves to meet the challenges of an ever-evolving industry dynamic.”
Lewis currently holds the following industry titles and certifications:
• WSET 1- 3 Wine
• WSET Wine Diplomas
• WSET 1 Sake
• WSET 1- 3 Spirits
• WSET Nominated Educator- Wine & Spirits
• Certified Specialist in Wine
• French Wine Scholar
He is currently one of the six Master of Wine Candidates in Texas, having been accepted for the program last month. Lewis is also a part of several wine groups, clubs and organizations that serve as opportunities for tasting, learning and networking.
Suffice to say, education will remain a core component of his impressive work in the beverage alcohol industry.
“ My current personal goal is to work towards becoming a Master of Wine,” Lewis says.“ Having been admitted into the institute as a candidate, I have begun to see firsthand how steep a climb achieving this goal will be, but also how rewarding it is for those who make it through, and even those who don’ t. Every day I read, study, taste, and communicate with those across the industry to help better understand every facet of our global wine community with an eye towards achieving the MW title.”
Additionally, Lewis has excelled as a retail employee. Says his nominator, former colleague, and friend, Patrick Colson:“ Ian started as a floor salesperson at a floundering liquor store, became that locations manager and made it one of the best stores in the company in under two years time both in retail and wholesale aspects. He grew and tailored a returning clientele in both aspects, where wholesale business management was not his responsibility, but again Tian will drive excellence. Wholesale at that store was a one-man part-time operation that you wouldn ' t recognize nowadays. Tian also spearheaded the launch of large-scale wholesale operation in the Houston market for the company.”
“ Tian has turned around the performance of several stores for the company, expanded wholesale operations from nothing ground up launches,” Colson add.“ Tian has raised the standard.”
