Worth Every Penny U.S. Route 550 meanders for 305 miles from Bernalillo, New Mexico, to Montrose, Colorado. The 23-mile stretch in Colorado between the historic mining towns of Silverton and Ouray is known as the Million Dollar Highway. Exactly why it's called that is a matter of debate—some say that's how much it cost to build the road, some say it's the price paid for the land and others say it's the value of the ore-bearing fill used as road base. Why it was named is less important than what it is, which is a wonderfully serpentine road through the Rocky Mountains with million-dollar views, especially the sections that pass through the deep Uncompaghre Gorge and over 11,018-foot Red Mountain Pass. Stormy weather has a way of amplifying its grandeur, as was the case during the cross-country Sisters' Centennial Motorcycle Ride in July 2016.
